LEAN Empower is dedicated to building resilient, confident, and educated young girls in under-resourced communities. Our mission is to break down the stigma around menstruation, support girls’ mental well-being, and ensure no girl misses school simply because of her period.

Our vision is to create township communities where every girl has access to menstrual dignity, emotional support, and the opportunity to thrive academically — without shame, without interruption. At the heart of LEAN Empower is our flagship initiative: the Menstrual Health & Mental Wellness Project, launched in partnership with Emfundisweni Primary School in Alexandra Township. Targeting girls in Grades 4 to 7 (ages ~9–13), this programme takes a holistic, psychosocial approach to menstrual health, combining material support, education, and emotional empowerment.

Since launching at Emfundisweni Primary:

Over 100+ girls have received sanitary pads (with plans to scale further).

• Teachers report greater confidence and willingness among girls to talk about menstruation.

• Girls describe a sense of relief and normalcy, knowing they no longer have to worry about missing school.

• The school community is more engaged — caregivers and teachers are more informed and involved.
